How to make birdseed ornaments for Valentine’s Day
These heart birdseed favors are a fun kids’ activity and a wonderful way to teach children about the benefits of nature and helping animals.
What ingredients do you need to make homemade birdseed?
- 3 cups of bird seeds
- 4 tbsp corn syrup
- 2 envelopes of unflavored Knox gelatin
- 1/2 cup of water
- 3/4 cup of flour
- Cooking spray
- Heart-shaped cookie cutters
- Straw
- Twine
- Parchment paper or wax paper
- Cookie sheet
- Measuring cups
- Large bowl
How to make homemade heart birdseed ornaments
- Mix all ingredients except the birdseed in a large bowl. Mix well.
- Add birdseed and mix until you get a sticky consistent mixture evenly.
- Next, spray the inside of the heart-shaped cookie cutter with cooking spray.
- Place wax paper on the cookie sheet.
- Pack the inside of the cookie cutter with the bird feed mixture on top of the cookie sheet. Use the top of a measuring cup to flatten the mixture. This is also when my daughter helped me the most.
- Once molded into the cookie-cutter, insert a straw towards the top of the heart to make a hole. This is where the twine will go through once it’s dry.
- Slide the cookie-cutter of the heart-shaped bird feeder. It should glide off thanks to the cooking spray.
- Repeat steps to make more hearts.
- Let them stand and dry for at least 3 hours or overnight to be safe.
- Once dry, cut the twine and tie through the hole. Don’t worry if your hole did not go all the way through. You can use the straw again to push it through.
Aren’t these the cutest? If you are giving them out, you could put them in a clear bag with a sweet note.
We had to keep one for ourselves to hang on our tiny little tree. I hope the birds love it!
Feel free to make the heart-shaped birdseed favors for any time of the year. We could always use more love in this world and the birds will thank you for it!

How long would these last? I plan on making these for my sisters baby shower and would like to get them done ahead of time. Her party is 11/14. Would it be okay if I made them this next weekend 10/10?
Michelle Hancock says
I am so sorry, but I am not sure. I assume they will be okay if you store them somewhere comfortably. My only concern would be mold maybe but I am not sure. I have never stored them for a long time.

I am making approximately 200 of these for a wedding. Has anyone made them a month in advance? Any problem with mold or any other issues? They will be immediately placed into sealed bags.
Thank you!
Michelle Hancock says
Store bird feeder ornaments in an airtight container or zip-top back in a dry, cool place, away from moisture and heat.
Birdseed ornaments will last for 4 to 6 months.
