The hot summer months are a great time to stay indoors and use this free easy-to-follow Summer declutter checklist. Find out what things to throw out this Summer. Get rid of clutter before school starts! Free your mind of the things that are weighing you down.
Late Summer is the perfect time to dedicate some time to declutter your home. It’s a good idea to get rid of the things that are stressing you out and haven’t been used in some time (i.e. junk drawer and a medicine cabinet that has been neglected for some time). Parents get busy and it’s hard to remember to declutter so this checklist will make it easy to declutter.
30 Things to Throw out this Summer
Whether you recently moved into a new home or have lived in your home for years, there’s no better time than Summer to declutter. It’s a great time of year to stay indoors away from the warmer temperatures to focus on getting your house tidy and clean.
Why spend time decluttering?
The fewer items you have means the fewer items you have to pick up, organize and store! Also, it’s been proven that organized spaces reduce stress, improve mental health, and improve your eating and exercise habits. In the words of Marie Kondo, if something doesn’t spark joy or isn’t usable anymore, it’s time to say goodbye.

This declutter checklist makes the decluttering process simple and doable. Declutter a little bit every day or knock it out in larger chunks of time.
Best summer declutter tips
Summer decluttering made easy! First, sort your item into four different piles: Donate, Sell, Recyle or Trash. Keep small baskets or trash bags nearby to keep everything organized. Use the blank Summer Declutter Checklist to stay focused.
- Donate – give to a local charity, a friend in need, or a church. Find a local drop-off site for a non-profit organization. There are a few organizations that will pick up your larger items like furniture.
- Sell – There are some items that you can make money off of if you have the desire to do so. Host a garage sale if you have a lot of items or sell individually online. Yard sales are a great way to get rid of a lot of unwanted items. Thrift stores that buy your donations are always an option. Remember, to always be safe while selling items online. Always meet in a public location or with those you trust.
- Recycle – Are there any of your items that you can recycle instead of tossing?
More declutter pro tips:
- Avoid burnout! The worst thing that can happen is you go too hard the first few days decluttering and you give up completely. Start at the beginning of the month and finish one declutter checklist task each day. After 30 days, you will have a decluttered home at the end of the month. What a great start to August where you can focus all your attention on back-to-school shopping and school supplies.
- Can’t let go of items that have sentimental value? Consider placing these in a sealed container that offers easy access.
- Short on time? Get professional help and hire someone to declutter for you. There’s no shame is delegating!
- Consider getting the family members on board but only if they are good at letting go of items. They could slow down your home organization process.
