Mason Jar Project instructions
First, pour paint into a mason jar.
You don’t need a huge amount of paint to cover the area, but if you want to be cautious to get it completely covered use as much as you like. Just know that the more you place inside the more paint will pour out once you flip it over.
Next, move the mason jar in a circular motion to cover completely with paint.
Keep turning it and have patience with the paint.
Pour excess paint back into paint container, then place jar upside down on wax paper and dry overnight. Wax paper works better than paper towels because it won’t stick to the jar. Yes, I learned that the hard way during my first attempt at making painted mason jars.
Isn’t this Mason Jar DIY project super simple with a pretty outcome? Use your jars as centerpiece ideas, pencil/pen holders or stand-alone pieces throughout the home.
Get creative with them. Consider holidays as you decide how to paint your Mason Jars. Paint orange to make pumpkin jars or white for the snowman in the winter. Make a Santa Mason Jar or paint the jar to hold gift cards as a present. The options are endless! How do you plan on painting your mason jars?

What color paint did you use? I really like that color. I wanted to put large kitchen utensils (i.e. whisk, wooden spoon, spatula) in it and put it on the counter. Do you think that would work or do you see any issues in that?
Harrietta says
Did you use more than one hydrangea in your pint jars or is one enough?
Michelle Hancock says
One was enough 🙂
Harrietta says
I did try this but used sassy lavender paint (sample) but used same flowers. I love it and my daughter loves it. I made it for her. And it is very inexpensive. Thank you so much for the great and easy idea. I love old canning jars
Michelle Hancock says
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for reading and I am glad they turned out so well!
Teresa Smith says
Has this peeled/scratched off after some use?
Michelle Hancock says
Mine has held up quite nicely!
Gloria Van Dyken says
What kind of ain’t do you use? What kind can you paint with that you can use with water for fresh flowers.
Linda Marrs says
I used Apple Barrel acrylic paint from Walmart @ $ .87 per bottle. The first try wasn’t great as the paint was too thick. So I watered it down and tried again but since there was not much paint left, I think I watered it down too much. Also, Apple Barrel instructions said you can let it dry an hour and then bake at 350 degrees for 30 min. I did that but only let oven get to 300 degrees. Otherwise, they say to wait 21 days. I wondered if they were referring to painting on the outside or inside. Will try again as I wasn’t happy with the coverage and it looked splotchy when light came through. I think I can do better! Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear it didnt work out. I did not use Acrylic Paint but rather this paint https://www.lowes.com/pd/Valspar-La-Fonda-Teal-Interior-Satin-Paint-Sample/50194015. It’s a satin paint sample. Maybe that will work better.
Michelle Hancock says
I used this paint found here: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Valspar-La-Fonda-Teal-Interior-Satin-Paint-Sample/50194015. It’s a satin paint sample.

I got the valspar paint and it peeled off after I added the second coat! Do I need to prep the jar inside first? I washed it… please help!

Michelle Hancock says
So sorry to hear that. I did not wash mine so that did not happen to me. Did you handwash?
Staci says
Are you able to put fresh flowers and water inside the jars without compromising the paint on the inside or the flowers?
Michelle Hancock says
That is a great question! I have not tried that yet. I don’t think it will chip it.
Maria Espinoza says
Michelle what are the colors you used on this tutorial ?
thanks Maria
Michelle Hancock says
Hi Maria,
I used these Valspar colors: Baby Blush, Mystic Sea, and Frappe. Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by! Michelle
Jill says
Can I use the jars for tissues with it painted on inside or will the paint wear off?
Michelle Hancock says
I am pretty sure the paint should stay put!
Marion says
Did anyone cheat and help along with a brush. I found it quite snow to move the paint around
Michelle Hancock says
Mine didn’t move too slow, but I have not tried it with a brush. Wonder if your paint is really thick?
Wendy says
How many jars can you make with one Valspar sample make? I love this idea.
Maria Gervasi says
I used acrylic paint and the inside hasn’t dryed yet. It’s been almost 2 days. Do I have to put them in the oven to dry.
June says
If you use the jar for tissues how will the jar stay in place without it coming off the counter. I wouldn’t think it would be heavy enough to stay in place if little kids were to take one out
Kristen says
Is there another kind of paint I can use for this? I don’t have a Lowe’s nearby and I can’t find Valspar anywhere else.
Michelle Hancock says
You can also use any acrylic paint found at Michaels, HObby Lobby or even Amazon!
Edie says
Will a tea light show through
I want to light them as centerpieces
Robin says
Hi, can I use chalk paint, bake the jars and then put water in them and fresh flowers for a baby shower centerpiece?
Michelle Hancock says
I’ve never tried that before so I am not sure. However, I found this post that can help https://michellejdesigns.com/how-to-use-chalk-paint-for-glass-for-an-amazing-look/
