Thank you Disney for inviting me to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie screening in exchange for this spoiler-free review.
Before you read any further, trust me when I say this will be a spoiler free review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The second the movie ended and once my movie high wore off, I thought, “How in the world am I going to write about such an epic movie without giving away any plot lines?”
Thankfully, I brought my Star Wars loving husband along to the movie screening to help craft a spoiler-free review. Our thoughts will give you enough to get excited without spoiling major plot lines.
Please come back and share your thoughts with me as it’s killing me not to talk about it. My theories and thoughts need to get out of my head, but that is for another post and time.
Why Star Wars: The Last Jedi is Worth the Wait
It’s been a long wait for Star Wars fans; however, it’s definitely been worth it, and here’s why…
The rise of women
2017 has been the year of women both on and off-screen. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is no different. Strong, female leads will have you cheering them on to the very end. These women can hold their own. Every scene they are in is captivating and demands attention. Case in point: General Leia played by the late Carrie Fisher. It’s bittersweet to see her acting in this reinvented Star Wars film.
Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) is also one of these women and you may recognize from another major series. She is the commander of the Stormtroopers and certainly stands out in her chrome armor.
Rey (Daisy Ridley) returns and struggles to find herself and her place in all of this as the Force collides in epic fashion. She is also a total bad-ass and that is all I can say. I am curious to know her arm workout plan because boy, is she is in shape!
Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) is new to the Star Wars franchise. She is a great addition and a break out star. Living a mundane life she finds herself thrust into the fore front of all the action. I predict we will see her in more Hollywood movies soon.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi also introduces audiences to Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) a character with a confusing and fierce attitude. I dig her purple hair!
An Irresistible Storyline
This installment of Star Wars might be the best storytelling and movie making I have seen since The Empire Strikes Back. Every scene has a purpose and moves the story along. Do not even think about taking a bathroom break at any point (which is hard when the movie runs 2 hours and 32 minutes long).
There is a magnitude of action sequences that don’t overdo it. Most of the dialogue is easy to follow regardless if you haven’t seen every Star Wars movie.
However, I do recommend brushing up on your Star Wars knowledge and definitely re-watch The Force Awakens so you are not totally in the dark.
There are a lot of stars in this film, but the major star is Luke Skywalker.
Will we find out what he has been up to? Why is he hiding out these days?
You will have to watch it yourself to find out. Remember, no spoilers from me!
Personally, I enjoyed seeing Luke Skywalker in this film. It reminded me of why I loved the classic Star Wars films and also proves why Luke is so special to the story.
Incredible set designs
This film is easy on the eyes and shines through the big screen. I was impressed by the visual effects and imagery. Every location in the galaxy is different and unique to the setting. The locations in itself are important and host their own stories. Two locations that stand out in my mind are Crait, the salt planet, and Canto Bight, the casino planet. Pay attention to both.
A nod to the classic Star Wars franchise and a special tribute
You can’t help but feel a bit sad knowing that Carrie Fisher who plays Princess Leia is no longer with us on this Earth. Did you know her daughter also plays a role in the film? It’s bittersweet watching them interact in scenes. I love the way this film reminds us why we fell in love with the classic Star Wars films.
Some questions will be answered
Nothing annoys me more than waiting for a new installment of a show or film to leave still having so many unanswered questions. This film answers some of our questions but also leaves some unanswered. Plus, you will have more questions to ponder leading up to the next film. And, no, I won’t tell you which ones because #SpoilerFree (Google the internet if you REALLY want to know)
Keep in mind, Luke Skywalker said in The Last Jedi trailer, “This is not going to go the way you think.”
And that my fellow Star Wars fanatics, is the perfect way to sum up this movie:
Expect the unexpected.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is captivating and lives up to the hype. It’s a movie you will want to watch more than once to pick up on clues and hints.
Make a date night out of it or bring your teens/tweens along. It might be too long for the younger kids and as I said, you will not want to leave any moment of it for a bathroom break so find a sitter – it’s well worth it!
