As parents, we spend a lot of time in the laundry room and who doesn’t want this space to look amazing and organized? It’s tempting to place detergent and cleaning supplies in clear glass and plastic containers that look pretty, but don’t fall for this current organizational trend. The extra time you spend to kid-proof your laundry room will prevent potential accidents that could hurt your children and/or pets.
It is possible to have a decorative and organized laundry room that is also safe and kid-friendly. Proper storage and use of all cleaning products is a daily practice that will keep your family safe and healthy.
Laundry Room Safety Tips: The Do’s and Don’ts
DO keep laundry packets in original containers. Store them up and out of reach of children and pets.
Don’t prioritize style over safety. You should never store laundry detergent or cleaning supplies in bins that aren’t their original containers, like glass jars or clear containers. Liquid laundry product packaging and other detergent containers were designed with child-resistant innovation in mind. While glass containers may be pretty and aesthetically pleasing, they send a confusing message to children and make it easier for kids and pets to gain access to these products.
DO eliminate clutter or anything that children may climb on to be able to reach cleaning supplies. Discard items you no longer use.
DO keep consistency and purchase matching baskets for an organized look. In my previous home, I had open shelves in my laundry room. I stored laundry supplies in their original containers inside the baskets up high and out of reach from children. Consider adding laundry labels to the front of plastic storage bins to keep supplies organized.
DO teach children that laundry packets are not toys.
