Looking back, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I started a newspaper in 5th grade, sold cooking supplies in college, and now I own two businesses. Now as a parent, I would like to pass that entrepreneurial spirit on to my own children.
It’s never too early to explain entrepreneurship to kids. Our kids got a taste of business ownership when we encouraged them not only to sell lemonade but to assist in building a lemonade stand. It was a great experience and seeing their faces light up with each customer they served. They can’t stop talking about it and neither can their friends – they want to create their own businesses now!
Benefits to teaching kids entrepreneurship
- Builds confidence – Entrepreneurship is a natural expression of a child’s gifts. When they see their concept or service come alive it builds their confidence.
- Money Management – Children will learn the concept of managing money and overseeing the costs of running a business.
- Problem-solving – Children have to think quickly and solve problems when they arise.
- Cultivates Creativity – My kids had a lot of opinions when it came to decorating the lemonade stand. They helped paint and style the stand.
- Leadership – Some of the best leaders are business owners!
