Thank you McKinney Performing Arts Center for sponsoring today’s DIY Pirate Costume activity! This comes right in time for The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told performance on September 30.
Did you know that today, September 19th, is Talk Like a Pirate Day? I couldn’t help but let out a little, “Arrgghh!” as I was writing that sentence. My daughter loves pirates right now! In Florida, we got to go on a pirate ship a few years ago and she loved it. Now, she can enjoy the fun of pirates without having to go far. The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told is coming to MPAC and it’s fun for the entire family. They encourage everyone to dress up, bring props and get in on the fun. But, what if you don’t have a pirate costume and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on one?
Don’t fret! I was able to make a DIY pirate costume in less than 15 minutes for my daughter using items we had around the house mixed in with a few store bought items.
How to Make a DIY Pirate Costume
Most of these items we had already; however, I did splurge and buy the pirate eye patch in the Target party favor aisle. They also had pirate hats for $2. Michaels also sells black pirate bandanas.
Instructions for the costume
Cut triangles in the white shirt around the base and arms of the shirts.
Cut red ribbon according to the waist size.
Instructions for the costume props
Tear out a 12×12 portion of aluminum foil and roll up like shown below.
Cut a circle out of the solo cup base using a X-Acto knife.
Place the rolled up aluminum foil into the hole of the solo cup. Mold the foil into a hook.
Next, put everything together by tying the red ribbon over the white shirt at the waist. Tie in a knot or bow. We paired the shirt with white/black striped leggings with black boots.
Congrats! You now have a DIY pirate costume that is perfect to wear for showing of The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told. Plus, this outfit could also double as a Halloween costume.

McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) presents The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. The Off-Broadway show is an improvised, interactive, musical pirate adventure filled with swordplay, wordplay and a boatload of laughs for pirates’ age four to 104, this swashbuckling musical is never the same show twice!
The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told is a nutty, musical adventure that revolves around Captain Henry Martin and his unwavering crew of misfit pirates, who have been flung into the future by a flummoxed sea witch to perform the greatest pirate epic ever seen on stage. But when their script is partially obscured by a tragic squid ink accident, the crew must turn to the audience to fill in the missing bits of the plot. Cast members improvise their musical adventure, seamlessly weaving the audience suggestions into scenes, songs and more!
According to The New York Times, the show is “more laughs than there are bones in Davy Jones’s locker.” The show was nominated as the “Best Family Show 2014” by the Off-Broadway Alliance Awards.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students. Purchase tickets at MPAC, 111 N. Tennessee St., online or by calling 214-544-4630.
