I am doing cartwheels and jumping in excitement to FINALLY see the sun after experiencing a month filled with rain, cloudy skies, and depressing weather. The sun makes me so happy!
A few weeks ago in the midst of the stormy, dark weather, I had the opportunity to attend a presentation by The Vision Council and Dr. Adamopoulos, OD about protecting your eyes for a lifetime and during the summer months when the sun is out more frequently.
First of all, Did you know that Dallas is on the highest UV Index Level list rated #17 in the country? Yikes! Check out below if your city made the list. If so, you really need to read this post!
Wear those shades people even if it’s cloudy outside. According to The Vision Council, 1 in 4 Americans rarely wear sunglasses!
Looking back on my adolescence, I wasn’t the smartest person when it came to sun safety. Getting a tan was my #1 priority because tanned fat looked better than pale white fat in my clouded mind! Wow, my priorities were really off then.
Now I am older and wiser and I know that putting on sunscreen and wearing sunglasses is important, but I did not realize how important it really is for adults and children to always wear sunglasses and the right type of sunglasses that have UV/UVB protection. Yes, I was priding myself on wearing sunglasses that were stylish and affordable, but who really knows if they had UV/UVB protection because I was going for cheapness over quality (because I have been known to lose or break them).
Those days are over now because, guess what?If your glasses don't have UV/UVB protection, they aren't protecting your eyes from UV damage. Click To Tweet
Invest in your eyes and spend the extra money to make sure you are protected against the sun! I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy seeing and I don’t want to take that gift for granted. Thank you to The Vision Council for reminding me just how important sun safety is and to start healthy habits now with my daughter. We can enjoy the sun and also be smart, so we can save the ultimate gift which is that of eyesight!
It is so important to start healthy habits early in our children’s life. My daughter loves to wear her sunglasses because she wants to be like Mommy (for now anyway!). UV Radiation effects kids differently than adults. Children receive 3x the annual adult dose of UV radiation and 25% of lifetime UV exposure to the eye occurs in children before they hit the age of 18.
There are some serious consequences to eye damage caused by UV exposure. Not to scare you, okay, maybe I am using a scare tactic to get your attention.
Here are a few effects sun damage has on our precious eyes:
Short Term Vision problems: irritation, redness, swelling, sensitive to light
Long Term Vision problems: Premature aging, cataracts, cancer of the eye, macular degeneration.
Make an investment into your eyes and spend the extra money to make sure you are protected against the sun!
I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy seeing and I don’t want to take that gift for granted.
