Today marks the day that I am 17 weeks pregnant with Baby Hancock. It’s been a week since we found out the gender of our baby, so this may be old news if you follow along on Facebook (I know I am slacking on blogging about it, but it’s been a busy holiday week and hello pregnancy brain! It’s real folks!)
The day started out like any other day, but I woke up really excited. I always look forward to baby doctor appointments, especially ultrasound days.
My parents decided to visit for the day, so my mom tagged along for our appointment. It was a great moment to share with her. Ultrasounds freak my Dad out, so he stayed home with Reese.
I was told that at week 16 there would be a 75 percent chance to tell the gender depending on how the baby was sitting. If legs are crossed then it would be much more difficult.
Earlier that day I asked my Facebook friends what they thought the gender would be. It was a divided house. I forgot my doctor and I are Facebook friends (I know, some people think it’s weird, but I think it’s cool). She weighed in with a simple, “Oh the pressure!” response.
I had mixed feelings. I thought it was a boy in the beginning of the pregnancy; however, when I kept having morning sickness and craving sugar I was certain it was a girl. That was until I took the baking soda test and it proved to be a boy. I know it’s not official, but it made me feel that maybe the baby could be a boy.
Prior to this week, Reese said she did NOT want a brother. She wanted a baby sister. Thank goodness for cute Baby Joey that was born a month ago. He lives close by and won Reese over. I kept saying, “See, brothers aren’t so bad are they?” Just in case this baby was a boy I didn’t want her to be so upset.
I was really surprised when she said she thought it was a boy in the video. More on that later..
Back to the doctor’s appointment…
With my mom and husband in tow, we went to the doctor’s office hopeful we would have a gender to reveal later.
Our Doctor asked us all what we thought the baby was.
In unison, we all replied, “Boy!”
She told us to look away (because we didn’t want to know the sex just yet).
“Your baby is definitely not modest!” She said.
Definitely my child.
“I feel confident about the gender and you can announce it on Facebook!” She said. (Sign of the times, huh?)
Keeping her poker face on, she put the sonogram that revealed the gender in a card and wished us well.
I wanted to rip that card wide open the second she handed it to me. I have the worst patience. We didn’t do a gender reveal when I was pregnant with Reese. This time I felt like it was important to do. I wanted to videotape her reaction as well as ours.
It was definitely worth the wait. Worth the morning sickness. Worth the lack of energy to experience this exciting and beautiful moment.
Watch and see if we are having a boy or a girl!

Next on the agenda: Coming up with a baby name! Boy names are proving to be challenging for my husband and I.
