What do you need to make hot cocoa bombs?
You only need a few ingredients and supplies to make this easy dessert recipe:
Equipment needed
- 2-1/2” Cocoa silicone molds
- 1 small microwave-safe bowl
- A piece of parchment paper
- Piping bag
- spoon
- rubber spatula
Ingredients
- 1 cup white almond bark or white chocolate chips
- 1/8 cup of candy melts – pink candy melts, green candy melts, blue candy melts, purple candy melts
- 1 cup Lucky Charms marshmallows from a box of Lucky Charms
- 3 tablespoons hot chocolate mix
How to make Hot Chocolate Bombs
- Melt chocolate bark in a microwave-safe bowl for 30-second increments, stirring between each session until chocolate is smooth and melted.
- Drop 1-2 tablespoons of chocolate into the mold and spread it around to get even coverage (you can use a spoon, brush, or see note for more help!) Allow the chocolate to set, and then repeat a second time to let the sphere become thicker and easier to work with. Allow the chocolate to set before trying to remove it from the mold.
- Once the chocolate is set, carefully invert the silicone and remove the chocolate. Set out all 6 sphere halves,
- In one empty chocolate half, add 1 tablespoon of the instant coffee, and 1 tablespoon of hot cocoa mix, and mound up the lucky charms inside. The marshmallows can be heaped up as they just need to fit inside the closed sphere. Save some marshmallows to decorate the exterior after the chocolate spheres are assembled.
- Place any remaining white chocolate in a piping bag and cut a small hole in the tip. If you have run out of chocolate, you can put some directly in the bag and microwave it for 30-second increments, kneading it between each session until melted. Allow the chocolate to cool down a bit before using, or you will melt your bomb as you work.
- Drizzle the chocolate around the sides of the mold and use the back of a spoon to smooth the chocolate out. Allow the chocolate to set.
- Place the candy melts in separate piping bags, and melt them in the microwave for 30-second increments, kneading them with your fingers between each session until the candy melts are melted. Cut holes in the tips and drizzle the candy on top of the cocoa bomb. I like to hide the seam with the candy so I like to drizzle it along the seam. Top off with any remaining lucky charms to finish decorating it.
- Now drop the delicious hot cocoa bombs into the filled cups of hot water or warm milk. Be amazed at how the hot chocolate bomb melts and transforms into a tasty treat. The bottom of the mug may be hot so be careful with kids wanting to touch it. Isn’t the process so much fun?
Notes
I found this much easier to manage after I cut the mold into separate pieces, and then poured the remaining chocolate in rotated the mold to spread the chocolate around, and then dump out the excess chocolate. It gave it a much more even coverage and was less likely to break after I coated it in chocolate 2 times.
Store the white hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container until ready to serve at room temperature.
