Everyone has heard of a diaper cake, but have you heard about a DIY diaper cake basket? I made a diaper cake basket that can also serve as an event centerpiece and gift to the mom-to-be.
DIY Diaper Cake Basket
DIY Diaper Cake Supplies:
- Diapers (size 1 or 2 work best for this project)
- Extruded Styrofoam Wreath
- Ribbon (to wrap the foam wreath)
- Gift Basket Crinkled Paper
- Pins
- Rubberbands
- Wide ribbon to tie around the diaper base of the basket.
- Wilton 12 Inch Silver Cake Platter
- Dowels
DIY Diaper Cake Basket Instructions
1. Roll up each diaper individually and tie with a rubber band. Make enough to go around the perimeter of the cake platter. Then group them by three, tie with a rubber band. Keep doing this with all of them. Then, attached all the pieces together to make a circle.
2. Use ribbon to hide the rubber bands. Tie a bow at the front and embellish with your choice of decor. I used an elephant because it fit the theme of the shower and his nursery. Use pins to secure the ribbon along the way.
3. Cut the styrofoam wreath in half and wrap with your ribbon of choice. Secure with pins or hot glue.
4. Pin the foam to the top of the diapers on the side or push a dowel through the base and into the foam. (Push them upward through the diaper and into the base of the foam).
5. Fill the middle of the basket with crinkled paper.
6. The fun part – fill the basket with gifts of your choice! Pacifiers, onesies, rubber duckies, bottles, diaper rash cream, spoons, wipes, etc.
Word of Warning: Don’t pick the basket up by the handle. Transport it only by holding the base.

How about instead of using a cake stand for the base, you use a charger plate? I recently did a “liquor cake” for a friend of mine’s birthday, and used a charger plate for the base that I picked up at Hobby Lobby for $.99 and it worked great ๐

How about using a real basket. I am going to seach for a basket suitable to attach the diapers too. Coil the ribbon to the handle and voila!!

I use cake boards that I buy wholesale. They are like $.40 if you catch them on sale or buy in bulk. ๐

Another thought, drill a hole through the foam piece on each side and two through your cake board. Wrap a piece of string or ribbon through the holes and tie it to the board. This is how I keep my cakes together is to tie the stuffed animal on the top to the board and you cant even see it until you take it apart. Hope that makes sense. If it doesnt check me out at https://www.facebook.com/CakesandClothsByBrooke and I will do my best to explain with pics. ๐

Hi there,
I know this is about a year past this post, but I would suggest you wrap the whole thing in cellophane and tie it up with curling ribbon at the top. That way it will all stay together and its sort of gift wrapped that way too. Thanks for your ideas!

Hi! How are the diapers attached to the platter?
Michelle Hancock says
That’s the only downfall to this tutorial – you can’t really attach it to the platter because then the diapers would not be useable afterwards. Similar to the diaper cake, you must hold it from the bottom. You can’t hold it by the handle or it will fall apart. It’s made more for looks than anything. ๐
