Disclaimer: I received this product complimentary as part of PowerCenter’s Grand Opening Celebration in Lewisville, TX. I was not required to write a post, but I loved the product so much I had to share my experience with you!
Interstate Batteries’s new hands-on store, PowerCenter, is celebrating their Grand Opening in Lewisville, TX is this weekend (Sept 19). I had the opportunity to test out one of their fabulous products known as the Philips Hue Lighting system. My family has thoroughly enjoyed our first ‘smart home’ product. There may be no turning back now that we have had a taste of what it would be like to have a ‘smart home’.
I will be honest, I had never heard about hue lighting or personal wireless lights until this review came my way. On the flip side, my IT Geek husband was over-the-moon excited about playing with them from the second he laid eyes on the box. He was so excited that he wanted to open the lights right away before I kindly reminded him that I needed to take pictures of the product for this very own blog post.
Oh, blog husbands!
My Philips Hue Lighting Set Up Instructions
In the package are 3 standard size LED lights that fit in any regular socket, the bridge base station, an Ethernet cable, and power adapter. We put the lights in three different lamps in our living room to test out.
Setup was simple:
- Install the light bulbs into the lamps or light fixtures like you would a normal light bulb
- Attach the bridge to your WiFi router using the provided Ethernet cable
- Plug in the power to the bridge and wait for it to boot up (less than a minute)
- Download the Phillips hue IOS or Android App
- The App instructs you to press the center button on the bridge which connects your phone to the base station over WiFi
The app immediately found the hue lights that were on and that’s when the fun began! You can control each light independently or as a group. And when I say control, you can change the color of each light to pretty much anything you can imagine and you can also adjust the brightness.
The Hue Light Show Starring My Tot
You can add up to 50 lights per bridge, granted they are a little pricey (around $20 each), but they have a lifespan of 15,000 hours and come with a 2 year warranty. As a point of reference, regular incandescent lightbulbs have an average life span of 1,200 hours.
The Phillips hue App is one of about 6 free apps you can download from various creators that can control the lights. Most of them, like the hue app, have preset colors or scenes you can choose from. Some have preset patterns you can play with like, strobe, police, or candle light.
Have I lost you yet on geek talk? I promise it’s super simple and you don’t have to be married to an IT Genius to play with them! If you know how to work your iPhone, then you can enjoy hue lights.
